Food Distribution in Gorom-Gorom

food_aid_3_smallPierre, Pascal, and Seydou have been organising food aid for the people of Gorom-Gorom, providing help to many families at a time of great need.

Over 300 families received help through the first of a series of small subsidised and free food distributions.

Food aid is not something we focus on. However, May - June is the hardest time of year, when last year's harvest is finished and the rains haven't started. Grain stores are empty, and animals are thin. Once the rains start, then cows will start to produce milk, and wild grains can be gathered. This is what will keep communities going while they work their fields in July, August, and September, looking for the harvest in October and November.

But in the meantime, in May and June, many local families are eating at best only once/day. So this is when we target a small food aid programme, according to what funds we have available. We buy about £1,000 of millet cheaply at harvest time, and store it up until the "hungry months". Some of it we put aside for distribution to the very poorest, who have nothing. The rest we sell at about one-fifth of the normal price, enabling people to buy more food for their families than they would normally be able to. With the money we receive, we then do a second and third such subsidised sale, helping even more families, until all the money is finished.

On the first day, over 300 families were helped, and the second and third distributions will be held in the coming days.
